$25 million Surfers Paradise foreshore upgrade underway

The first stage of construction is under way with the area of foreshore between the northern end of the Soul development and Elkhorn Avenue now closed off to the public.

Beach access and a public toilet facility will remain open at the end of Elkhorn Avenue for the benefit of residents and tourists. Towards the end of the stage one works, the public toilet
facility will be demolished and the immediate surrounding area redeveloped.

Features of stage one include two new toilet blocks, a beach shelter, barbecues, picnic areas, open lawn space and new and improved beach access points with disability ramps.

About the project

The redevelopment of the foreshore aims to improve accessibility and safety along the foreshore and improve infrastructure for recreational use and major events.

The Surfers Paradise foreshore redevelopment takes in the area from Trickett Street to Elkhorn Avenue.  Council will complete its work in two stages (north and south) with the area in front of the new Soul building being carried out by its developer Juniper Group.

The project is being funded with a commitment of $20 million from Council’s $90 million economic infrastructure stimulus package which is providing employment opportunities for Gold Coast workers. Additional support of $5 million is being provided by the State Government.

The project is due for completion by June 2011.

More information

A five minute presentation  -  hosted by Channel Seven’s Liz Cantor - has been uploaded to the project website. Watch it now at: www.surfersforeshore.com.au for an excellent overview of the project, including computer generated footage of what the foreshore will look like on completion.
